The Crescent Route

Walking along slow and car-free roads, you will become acquainted with the picturesque village of Gijzenzele (part of Oosterzele) and the harsh "Battle of Gijzenzele. As World War II began to loom on the horizon, the Belgian army built a bunker belt around the strategically important city of Ghent. In May 1940, German attackers were held back here for three days. Info panels explain this bloody battle at six points on the trail.
