Huib Hoste and modernism in Wervik
As an architect and urbanist appointed by the High Commission for Reconstruction, Huib Hoste is responsible for the reconstruction of Zonnebeke, Wervik, Geluwe, Geluveld and Beselare. In some other South-West Flemish municipalities, including Diksmuide and Roeselare, he is rather informally involved in the reconstruction. As a progressive reconstruction architect, Hoste brought modernity into the front region after the heavy destruction during World War I.
For Wervik, Hoste was commissioned by the government to draw up the building lines and implantation plans. He restored the street pattern and took the opportunity to launch proposals to widen some of the historic streets. In addition, unlike in Zonnebeke, he took on a number of private projects from some Wervikans who had ties to the Hoste family. After all, Huib Hoste's mother, Adeline Cathรฉrine Vandensteene, was born in Wervik on March 6, 1844.
