A look behind the walls

What goes on behind the walls of the Great Beguinage? The site is well tucked away in Sint - Amandsberg, but even when you manage to find the place, the mystery remains. Beguines were an important religious movement in Flanders for centuries. Beguinages sprang up in highly urbanized centers. In Ghent, there were no less than four beguinages, including the Groot Begijnhof Sint-Elisabeth. Nowadays there are no longer any beguines, but their courts can still be found in the streetscape. Who were the beguines and what exactly did they do? In the Erfgoedapp Grand Mistress Raes (1882 - 1934) takes you on a tour and gives you a glimpse behind the walls.
