Vilvoorde on the waterfront
The urban concept study by Xaveer De Geyter Architects - drawn up in 2006 on behalf of Novovil NV and PSR Brownfield Developers - forms the starting point for all developments in the Watersite zone.
The study takes the landscape as its starting point, with elements such as the Brussels-Scheldt Canal, the Zenne River and the Three Fountains park. The area is divided into
different blocks where the Zenne is a constant.
To this day, Xaveer De Geyter's plan is the starting point for all
further developments in the zone. The first two subprojects, Kanaalpark and 4 Fonteinen (De Molens) near Broekstraat, are under development. In the extension of Broekstraat a new train stop will be built, a strong asset for
future developments along the axis Broekstraat - Kerklaan. A vision was developed for the zone between Canal Park and 4 Fonteinen, and plans are also
for the southern part. From Watersite, the link with the Three Fountains park will be made by a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the canal. Between Vlaanderenstraat and Broekstraat, the canal bank will be laid out step by step as a bicycle and pedestrian boulevard. Towards Brussels and especially beyond the viaduct, the emphasis is on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and businesses. The Zenne is the thread running through the area. Its banks are used as public space with bicycle and walking paths.
