René Van Steenbergen Route

About the architect René Van Steenbergen

Starting in 1934, architect and Beersen native René
Van Steenbergen (1911-1995) designed his first houses
in Beerse. The playful variations in
colors, gables and wall openings are remarkable,
signifying a striking new concept of
housing construction.
The architect is inspired by the
expressionist architecture of the Amsterdam
School. That style is characterized by Art Deco decorations
in the facades and the use of exuberant masonry
and different stone types. Steep pointed roofs are
combined with ornate turrets, ornamental ironwork
and traditional details on the window and door frames.
Also typical is the horizontal line, which is technically possible
through the application of new techniques, such as
reinforced concrete and steel.
After the Second World War, René Van
Steenbergen develops a new style that is functional and austere
and in which the architecture of the building is reduced to its
essence. He applies the same principle in
the building of churches from 1960 onwards.
