Vive Labeur
The bicycle route starts on the Grand Place of Poperinge. It takes you along a number of special locations that are connected with China, Poperinge and the First World War.
In the summer of 1917, the first Chinese workers arrive in Poperinge. They are employed by the British army and will stay until 1920. They live in separate camps and keep their own rituals. The Chinese arrive not as soldiers, but as guest workers. The Chinese Labor Corps is called upon to build railroads, make camouflage nets, maintain tanks and unload ammunition. After the war, they were responsible for clearing the battlefields.
What traces did they leave behind in Poperinge and its surroundings?
