Discover the cathedral of the north

Although it is often said, "It is not a cathedral," Our Lady of Assumption Church in Watervliet bears this nickname with a hidden pride and a nod to the Middle Ages. Located on the beautiful Stee, the church recalls late Burgundian Flanders, when Habsburg Philip the Handsome took the helm in Flanders and Hieronymus Lauwerijn was knighted as treasurer general. His tombstone rests here, next to the monumental artwork Nood Gods by the Master of Frankfurt, a recognized masterpiece in Flanders.

This heritage tour, developed by COMEET and the municipality of Sint-Laureins, leads visitors through this extraordinary church in the heart of the polders. Those looking for more depth after this will find what they are looking for in the Erfgoedsprokkel of the province of East Flanders on the contents of the church.
