St. John's Church
St. John Baptist and St. John Evangelist Church dates back largely to the late 14th and mid-15th centuries. This Gothic church has its origins in a 13th-century chapel. Like many medieval churches, St. John's suffered greatly during the religious strife (circa 1560). However, the church masters and parishioners did not give up and courageously set about rebuilding and redecorating. For more than a century, improvements were made to the interior.
Despite its relatively small scale, St. John's Church is overflowing with works of art from several centuries. The eye-catcher is the 17th-century triptych by Peter Paul Rubens. Also notable are the murals from around 1400 on the first level of the west tower. The church includes many works of Mechelen manufacture such as the church master pews, pulpit and organ. They testify to the talent present in the city.
