Architectural gems in the Dumont neighborhood

In addition to sun, sea and sand, De Panne offers visitors a unique piece of coastal architecture: the Dumont neighborhood. The core of this villa district, with more than 500 homes, dates back to the end of the 19th century. At the time, it formed the first global urbanization phase of the coastal municipality. Characteristic of this picturesque urbanization under the direction of Albert Dumont, and assisted by other architects such as his son Alexis Dumont, Georges Hobé and Jozef Viérin, was the implantation, while respecting the natural relief of the dunes, of a new form of housing: the rural cottage.
Today, the Dumont neighborhood shows us a sampling of the prevailing architectural styles from the end of the 19th century until after World War II, from the cottage style through art nouveau and art deco to modernism and an eclectic language of forms. The Dumont district is illustrative of the stylistic evolution that coastal architecture has undergone.
The relatively well-preserved Dumont district has been protected as a townscape since 1995 and can be considered one of the most important testimonies to the burgeoning tourism on our coast.
This app was launched on the occasion of Open Monuments Day 2020, but is a "work in progress. This means that the app will be systematically supplemented and later possibly expanded to include architecture from outside the Dumont neighborhood and the municipality's other cultural patrimony. Our sincere appreciation to everyone who has contributed to the realization of this app. Comments on the app are welcome at cultuur@depanne.be.
