Willems Route North
Cycle the story of the canal
This 122 km long canal was dug out by hand in just 4 years at the beginning of the 19th century. The Zuid-Willemsvaart became a shorter and reliable alternative to the often unpredictable and unnavigable Meuse.
The canal connects Maastricht with 's-Hertogenbosch and runs an important part through Belgian Limburg.
The construction of the Zuid-Willemsvaart provided one of the most striking landscape interventions in this area. The canal connects the 3 beautiful nature reserves RiverPark Maasvallei, National Park Hoge Kempen and Grenspark Kempen~Broek.
You will pass the most beautiful spots of the region, along the water and in Grenspark Kempen~Broek, where you can enjoy fascinating stories and photos about the history of the canal. Discover also Willemsroute MIDDEN and ZUID!
This project was realized by the Flemish Waterway in cooperation with Regionaal Landschap Kempen en Maasland in the framework of Platteland Plus.
