From the ground to the mouth

The Groentestreek has been the cradle for pioneers and innovations in vegetable cultivation for 150 years.
Fed by the two Neten, Dijle, Demer and Rupel rivers, the soil in this region is fertile.
This river land with its clay and loam soils is ideal for horticulture.
And with the proximity of large cities such as Antwerp, Mechelen and Brussels, rapid sales were assured in the past.

Why is this so?

Farmer Achiel and Abbis Agnes take you through centuries of horticulture and market gardening.
Past historical farms and peasant superstition, over the imperial gardens of Charlemagne and Louis the Fourteenth, to the pioneers of the Mechelen vegetable growing region.
