Out and about with the ErfgoedApp: 20 Heritage Day activities

Don't immediately see heritage as something for you? Then be sure to check out the program for Heritage Day 2025. Under the motto Game On! , this year's event will focus entirely on sports and games. This will result in a number of daring activities in which the ErfgoedApp will also play ErfgoedApp role.

From the rich program, we selected a few tours, games, quests, and walks that challenge you to play with the past. In each of these activities, the ErfgoedApp invites ErfgoedApp to discover the cultural heritage of Flanders and Brussels in a playful way. Are you ready to join us on this adventure?

Searching for Traces in the City
Hey, detective! Would you like to learn more about Nieuwpoort in the past? Searching for Traces in the City takes you on a playful tour of some of Nieuwpoort-Stad's historical gems.
PLAY AND WIN! Archeobingo via the Erfgoedapp
WALK THE MERCURIUSPAD 'ON YOUR OWN INITIATIVE' You walk for 5 km past 6 information posts where archaeologists have found the remains of the past in the Grobbendonk soil. Was there a mammoth among them? At the information post at the starting point, at the library, there is a brochure with the walking route.

Heemkring Ter Cuere has developed a walking treasure hunt that takes us back to Bredene in 1939-1940. The 4 km long walking treasure hunt can be found in the ErfgoedApp Pick up your form at the starting point at Turkeyenhof, Zegelaan 42 in Bredene. The solution to the treasure hunt will be announced on Heritage Day.
Scavenger hunt with the Erfgoedapp: Nette and Lander on an adventure in Forsellara
Sunday, April 27, is Heritage Day again! The theme 'Game on' calls for sports and games! The board game Forsellara has been translated into an exciting walking treasure hunt in the Erfgoedapp: Nette and Lander go on an adventure and, via a secret underground passage, end up trapped in Forsellara, the Vorselaar of yesteryear, near the chapel in De Dreef. Can you help them return to their own time?

Devilish tricks in the Old Guest House!
The devil plays a dirty game in the Old Geel Hospital. According to an old legend, which has been told in Geel for centuries, he once drove an Irish king to commit a mad act. The king murdered his own daughter, Dimpna, on the spot where the Gasthuis now stands. A sacred place, but on Heritage Day it is a cursed place! The devil is seeking revenge. He and his demonic cronies are turning the Gasthuis upside down and playing with the residents' feet. Go on a treasure hunt through the museum rooms, play games along the way, solve riddles, and send the devil packing!
How children lived and played at Duffel Fort
From 1955 to 1972, Constant Marivoet lived with his family as caretaker of the fort in Duffel. A fort guide and one of the Marivoet children will take you on a tour of the fort. In addition to a brief history of the fort, you will learn more about the Marivoet family's childhood: where they played, what there was to do at the fort, where they lived with their family, etc. Reservations are recommended, as the number of participants is limited. Registration is open from March 15 to April 24.

Heritage Expedition: interactive heritage walk (Tongeren)
Discover Tongeren's rich past in a surprising and playful way! During this interactive heritage walk, you will delve into the fascinating history of the city, discover hidden stories, and solve challenging assignments. The Erfgoedapp you a unique insight into the past—whether you join the tour or explore from the comfort of your own home. Scan, listen, and play as you uncover the secrets of Tongeren's heritage.
Heritage walk: old children's games
During this new heritage route on the Erfgoedapp , you Erfgoedapp the history of the seaside resort of Westende through 10 interesting locations. At each heritage site, you can complete a fun assignment related to old children's games. You will learn about the famous jazz musician from Villa Sybaris and the founder of the seaside resort and internet pioneer Paul Otlet, among other things. But you will also have to take action and show your children how to play 1 2 3 piano or 'tikkertje verhoog' (a game similar to tag). And how long has it been since you last played hopscotch yourself?
Monument tour Wevelgem
(Re)discover Wevelgem and go on a bike or walking tour past all the protected monuments in Wevelgem or its boroughs! Start in the center of your chosen municipality, open the ErfgoedApp, and follow the suggested routes past all the protected buildings. Use the app to see and read about what they used to be like.
Cycle the Jempi Monseréroute with a stop at the Defraeye-Sercu cycling track
Reus Jempi welcomes you all to the freely accessible Defraeye-Sercu cycling track. Enjoy workshops on high-wheel bicycles, introductions to track cycling, and watch the broadcast of the Liège-Bastogne-Liège cycling classic with a delicious coffee on our cycling terrace. Every half hour, a guide will also teach you everything about the history of the cycling track. The cycling track is also the stop along the signposted cycling route, a combination of the northern loop 'Jempi Monseréroute' and the southern loop 'Wielerheldenroute', with a total length of 35 km.
Pedal Through Time: Bike Tour Along Vinkt's Memories
Cycling through Time: Bike Tour along the Memories of Vinkt Hop on your bike and relive history during this unique heritage activity. As part of Heritage Day, and with a special focus on the dramatic days of May 1940 in Vinkt, this bike tour takes you past historical locations and stories that are inextricably linked to this turbulent period. Along the way, you will discover places where the past comes alive and listen to fascinating anecdotes about the impact of those dramatic days in 1940 on the region.
New walking tour: ‘In the footsteps of Hendrik Conscience’
On Heritage Day, we are launching a revamped 'old' walk: Hendrik Conscience, the man who taught his people to read... but what connects this famous Flemish writer with Halle and Beersel? Find out during the inspiring 14.4 km (20,572 steps) Conscience walk.
Delve into the history of De Wijers
With the erfgoedapp hand, you can immerse yourself in the history of De Wijers during this walk through the pond area. Along the way, you can listen to fascinating stories from the rich 'water' history of the land of 1001 ponds. Discover the role of the abbeys of Herkenrode and Averbode in the landscape, learn how baronesses debated water rights, and listen to many other historical accounts from the history of De Wijers.

#STROOM: Cycle and walk along the railway and the Dender river
Discover the industrial past of Denderland. During the 19th century, many factories were established along the Dender River, and Denderland was connected by rail to major cities and the Walloon coal basins. The guide #STROOM – Heritage along the railway and the Dender takes you on a journey into the past of Aalst, Denderleeuw, Ninove, Erpe-Mere, and Lede. Join us by bike or on foot and discover the surprising heritage of Denderland!

Heritage Day?

Sunday, April 27, 2025, the 24th edition of Heritage Day will be dedicated to the playful theme Game On! For an entire day, you are welcome at hundreds of museums, archives, heritage libraries, and countless other heritage organizations throughout Flanders and Brussels. The common thread in the program? Cultural heritage with a focus on sports and games.
