Out and about with the ErfgoedApp: 20 Heritage Day activities

Don't immediately see heritage as something for you? Then be sure to dive into the program of Heritage Day 2025. Under the motto Game On, this year's event zooms in entirely on sports and games. And that makes for some daring activities in which the ErfgoedApp also plays a role.

From the rich program we selected some tours, games, quests and walks that challenge you to play with the past. In each of these activities, the ErfgoedApp invites you to playfully discover the cultural heritage of Flanders and Brussels. Will you join us on an adventure?

Tracking Tracks in the City
Hey Speurneus! Would you like to know more about the Nieuwpoort of old? Speuren naar Sporen in de Stad takes you playfully past some of Nieuwpoort City's historical gems.
PLAY AND WIN! Archaeobingo via the Erfgoedapp
WALK 'ON OWN INITIATIVE' THE MERCURIUSPAD For 5 km, you walk along 6 information posts where archaeologists have found the remains of the past in the Grobbendonk soil. Was there a mammoth among them? On the info pole at the starting point, at the library, there is a brochure with the walking route.

Heemkring Ter Cuere developed a walking quest that takes us back to the Bredene of 1939-1940. The 4km long walking quest can be found in the ErfgoedApp and get your fill-in form at the starting point Turkeyenhof, Zegelaan 42 in Bredene. The solution of the quest will be announced on Erfgoeddag.
Scavenger hunt with the Erfgoedapp: Nette and Lander on an adventure in Forsellara
Sunday, April 27, is Heritage Day again! The theme "Game on" calls for sports and games! The board game Forsellara has been translated into an exciting walking quest in the Erfgoedapp: Nette and Lander go on an adventure and get stuck in Forsellara, the Vorselaar of old, via a secret underground passage near the little chapel in De Dreef. Can you help them return to their own time?

In the spring of 2024, COMEET developed a cool heritage game entitled "Laurens looking 4 love" together with Heemkundige Kring Selsaete and the Zelzaat high schools. With a material bag and the ErfgoedApp in hand, students set out to discover Zelzaat heritage in a contemporary way.

From young to old, there is something for everyone to discover and experience!
Devil's tricks at the Old Guest House!
In the Oud Geels Gasthuis, the devil plays a dirty game. According to an old legend, told for centuries in Geel, he once drove an Irish king to a mad act. The king murdered his own daughter, Dimpna, on the spot where the Guest House now stands. A sacred place, then, but on Heritage Day it is a cursed place! The devil is bent on revenge. He and his demonic cronies turn the Guest House upside down and play with the residents' feet. Go on a treasure hunt through the museum rooms, play games along the way, solve riddles and play the devil back home!
How children lived and played at the Fort of Duffel
From 1955 to 1972, Constant Marivoet and his family lived as janitors at the fort in Duffel. A fort guide and one of Marivoet's children take you in tow through the fort. Besides a brief history about the fort, you will learn about the childhood of the Marivoet family: where did they play, what was going on at the fort, where did they live with the family,... Reservations are recommended, as the number of participants is limited. Registrations are open from March 15 through April 24.

Expedition Heritage: interactive heritage walk (Tongeren)
Discover Tongeren's rich past in a surprising and playful way! During this interactive heritage walk you will dive into the city's fascinating history, discover hidden stories and solve challenging assignments. With the Erfgoedapp , you get a unique perspective on the past - whether you join the tour or explore from the comfort of your home. Scan, listen and play as you unlock the secrets of Tongeren's heritage.
Heritage walk old children's games
During this new heritage route on the Erfgoedapp you will discover the history of the seaside resort of Westende through 10 interesting locations. For each heritage spot, you can complete a fun assignment related to old children's games. So you learn something about the famous jazz musician of villa Sybaris and the founder of the seaside resort and Internet pioneer Paul Otlet, among others. But you will also have to get into action and demonstrate to your children how 1 2 3 piano is played, or "raise the tag. And how long has it been since you played the hopscotch game yourself?
Monument Tour Wevelgem
(Re)Discover Wevelgem and go on a cycling or walking tour along all the protected monuments in Wevelgem or its boroughs! Start in the center of your chosen municipality, open the ErfgoedApp, and follow the suggested routes along all the protected buildings and see and read how they used to be via the app.
Cycle the Jempi Monseré route with experience stop at cycling track Defraeye-Sercu
Reus Jempi welcomes you all to the free cycling track Defraeye-Sercu. Enjoy high-bike workshops, track cycling initiations and follow the broadcast of the cycling classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège with a delicious coffee on our cycling terrace. A guide will teach you everything about the history of the track. The cycling track is also the stop along the signposted cycling route, a combination of north loop 'Jempi Monseréroute' and south loop 'Wielerheldenroute', in total 35km long.
Pedal through time: bike ride along the Memories of Vinkt
Pedal Through Time: Bike Tour Along the Memories of Vinkt Get on your bike and relive history during this unique heritage activity. As part of Heritage Day, and with a particular focus on the dramatic May Days of 1940 in Vinkt, this bicycle tour takes you past historic sites and stories inextricably linked to this eventful period. Along the way you will discover places where the past becomes palpable, and listen to fascinating anecdotes about the impact of these dramatic days in 1940 on the region.
New walk: 'Hendrik Conscience After'
On Heritage Day we are launching a renewed "old" walk: Hendrik Conscience, the man who taught his people to read.... but what connects this famous Flemish writer with Halle and Beersel? Find out during the inspiring Conscience walk of 14.4 km (20,572 steps).
Dive into the history of De Wijers
With the erfgoedapp in hand, dive into the history of De Wijers during this walk through the pond area. Along the way, listen to fascinating stories from the rich "water" past of the land of 1001 ponds. Discover the role of the abbeys of Herkenrode and Averbode on the landscape, find out how baronesses discussed water rights and listen to many other historical testimonies from the history of De Wijers.

#STROOM: Cycle and walk along rail and Dender
Discover Denderland's industrial past. During the 19th century, many factories established themselves along the Dender and Denderland was connected by rail to major cities and the Walloon coal basins. The guide #STROOM - Erfgoed langs spoor en Dender takes you to the past of Aalst, Denderleeuw, Ninove, Erpe-Mere and Lede. Cycle or walk along and discover surprising heritage in the Denderland!

Heritage Day?

Sunday, April 27, 2025, the 24th edition of Heritage Day will feature the playful theme Game On! For a whole day, you are welcome at hundreds of museums, archives, heritage libraries and countless other heritage organizations, throughout Flanders and Brussels. The common thread in the program? Cultural heritage in which sports and games take center stage.
