Bunker Route

Bunker Route

This is a walking route with a strong historical focus. As World War II began to loom on the horizon, the Belgian army built a defensive belt around the strategically important city of Ghent. On the hilltops near Oosterzele, just a stone’s throw from Ghent, dozens of fortified bunkers were erected to protect the city of Artevelde. Most of them are still there, standing out starkly in the rural landscape. We’ll pass by many of them via numerous country lanes and dirt paths. The result is a beautiful walk set against a lush green backdrop.
