The Half Moon Route
As you stroll along quiet, low-traffic roads, you’ll discover the picturesque village of Gijzenzele (a borough of Oosterzele) and learn about the fierce “Battle of Gijzenzele.” As World War II began to loom on the horizon, the Belgian army built a ring of bunkers around the strategically important city of Ghent. In May 1940, the German advance was halted here for three days. Information panels at six locations along the route provide details about this bloody battle.
