Out and about with Saint Martin in Wetteren

Although Saint Martin’s Day is still actively celebrated in our region, traditional elements are fading into the background, and the differences between it and the Sinterklaas celebration are becoming increasingly blurred. Through five Saint Martin’s Day routes, we highlight the customs and places associated with Saint Martin’s Day in our region. These routes are part of the more than 5,000 km long ‘Via Sancti Martini,’ a Cultural Route recognized by Europe.

With this 18.5 km walking route, you’ll discover the St. Martin’s heritage in beautiful Wetteren. You can start anywhere along the route. The walking direction is indicated by a combination of the St. Martin’s sticker and yellow arrows. Along part of the route, you’ll see both yellow and green arrows. If you follow the green arrows, the route will take you to Aalst, where it connects to the GR128. Please note: the route with the green arrows is not a loop!

Want to shorten the route? You can do so at Loweestraat in Massemen. The loop through Massemen and Westrem is then 7.5 km.
