Out and about with Saint Martin in Lebbeke, Berlare, and Wichelen

Although Saint Martin’s Day is still actively celebrated in our region, traditional elements are fading into the background, and the differences between it and the Sinterklaas celebration are becoming increasingly blurred. Through 5 St. Martin’s routes, we highlight the traditions and places associated with St. Martin in our region. These routes are part of the more than 5,000 km long “Via Sancti Martini,” a Cultural Route recognized by Europe.

This St. Martin’s route through Lebbeke, Berlare, and Wichelen largely follows the GR128. The walking direction is indicated by a combination of the Saint Martin sticker and the red-and-white GR markings (https://www.groteroutepaden.be/nl/bewegwijzering-en-onderhoud). To discover the St. Martin heritage in Berlare, briefly leave the GR route and follow the green arrows. This route rejoins the GR128 further on.

Note: this route is not a loop! You can easily return to and from Wetteren or Oudegem by train.
