Norbertine walk Veerle
The Norbertine Order will celebrate its 900th anniversary in 2021. In 1120, Norbert of Xanten settled in Prémontré, France, together with his followers. One year later, on Christmas Day 1121, they officially took their vows. With the founding of Tongerlo Abbey in 1130 and that of Averbode in 1134–1135, the Withers came very close. Both abbeys began to expand their estates and rights in their immediate surroundings. Veerle, bordering the wall of Averbode Abbey but located in a different diocese (the same as that of Tongerlo), was highly sought after by both abbeys.
To shed light on the work of the Norbertines in this parish, the LWGH (Laakdal Local History Society) has mapped out a historical walking tour here. The starting and ending point of the route is the old rectory. From there, we set off on a journey in the footsteps of the Norbertines. The Church of Our Lady in the Vineyard, the sacred grounds of the Wijngaardsbos, and the former baronial castle (which was later converted into part of the Norbertine convent) are just a few of the heritage sites we encounter on this walk.
