The rise of tourism during the Belle Époque, at the end of the 19th century, brought many wealthy vacationers to the town. Blankenberge also boasts a wealth of maritime heritage. These reminders of Blankenberge’s maritime past have been preserved, even though the fishing industry disappeared around 1955.
