A look behind the walls

What goes on behind the walls of the Groot Begijnhof? The site is tucked away in Sint-Amandsberg, but even if you manage to find it, it remains shrouded in mystery. For centuries, the Beguines were an important religious movement in Flanders. Beguinages sprang up in heavily urbanized centers. In Ghent, there were as many as four beguinages, including the Groot Begijnhof Sint-Elisabeth. Today, there are no longer any Beguines, but their courtyards are still part of the cityscape.
