A journey through time: Bachte-Maria-Leerne

A journey through time: Bachte-Maria-Leerne

The soil in Deinze holds significant archaeological potential. In recent years, the archaeological firm De Logi & Hoorne has conducted three excavations in Bachte-Maria-Leerne. The sites are just a stoneโ€™s throw from one another and have consistently yielded interesting and surprising finds from various periods. The archaeologists discovered a large Bronze Age farmstead dating back approximately 3,600 years, a unique wooden bowl from the Iron Age, a nearly complete settlement from the Roman period, and not only the early medieval precursor to the village from the 7thโ€“8th centuries but also two contemporary burials.

The city of Deinze, the local history associations Dunsa and Het Land van Nevele, the IOED Leie Schelde, Cultuurregio Leie Schelde, and De Logi & Hoorne (with additional sponsorship from the crane company De Pourcq in Astene) joined forces for the 2022 Archaeology Days to help the community learn about its past.
