Walking tour: traces of the Red Star Line in the city
Antwerp and Red Star Line are inextricably linked. Millions of emigrants have arrived and left Antwerp. This has left its traces. The Red Star Line route draws your attention to the traces and brings the stories back to life.
At the height of the Red Star Line's activities, two ships departed weekly. Each week, up to nearly 3,000 land movers moved from Central Station toward Rijnkaai. The land movers feasted their eyes but even the locals sometimes did not know what to make of the flow of people in the streets. The land mover economy was running at full speed. The Red Star Line was very present in the city.
Today, the traces of this story have all but disappeared. However, the Red Star Line Museum brings them back to life. With this route you will walk through the city and experience it as the emigrants did. Like them, you start at Central Station and end at the Scheldt where the Red Star Line ships left.
