Walk: Traces of the Red Star Line in the city

Antwerp and the Red Star Line are inextricably linked. Millions of emigrants arrived in Antwerp and departed from there. This has left its mark. The Red Star Line route draws your attention to these traces and brings the stories back to life.

At the height of the Red Star Line’s operations, two ships departed weekly. Every week, up to nearly 3,000 emigrants made their way from Central Station to Rijnkaai. The emigrants were amazed by everything they saw, but even the local population sometimes didn’t quite know what to make of the crowds in the streets. The emigration economy was in full swing. The Red Star Line had a strong presence in the city.

Today, the traces of this story have all but vanished. However, the Red Star Line Museum brings them back to life. With this route, you’ll walk through the city and experience it just as the emigrants did. Like them, you’ll start at Central Station and end at the Scheldt, where the Red Star Line ships departed.
