Vilvoorde by the water
The urban design concept study by Xaveer De Geyter Architects—commissioned in 2006 by Novovil NV and PSR Brownfield Developers—serves as the starting point for all developments in the Watersite zone.
The study takes the landscape as its starting point, incorporating elements such as the Brussels-Scheldt Sea Canal, the Senne River, and Drie Fonteinen Park. The area is divided into
several blocks, with the Zenne River serving as a constant.
Xaveer De Geyter’s plan remains the basis for all
further developments in the zone. The first two subprojects, Kanaalpark and 4 Fonteinen (De Molens) near Broekstraat, are currently under development. A new train stop will be built along the extension of Broekstraat, a major asset for
future developments along the Broekstraat–Kerklaan axis. A vision has been developed for the area between Kanaalpark and 4 Fonteinen, and plans are also in place
for the southern section. From Watersite, a connection will be established with Drie Fonteinen Park via a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the canal. Between Vlaanderstraat and Broekstraat, the canal bank is being gradually developed into a cycling and walking boulevard. Toward Brussels, and especially beyond the viaduct, the focus is on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and businesses. The Zenne River is the central thread running through the area. Its banks are being used as public space with cycling and walking paths.
