Veurne for everyone
Campus Engineering Veurne worked for several years on a project called “STEAM up for an Inclusive Veurne” in collaboration with the Province of West Flanders, with the aim of creating an inclusive walking tour through Veurne. Thanks to the Erasmus project “How special are your needs, can we help?”, a similar walking tour was created in five cities across five other countries.
Currently, this walking tour features about 12 videos with visuals, spoken text, and subtitles, as well as sign language. The walk is approximately 2.3 km long. Tactile models are located along the walk or nearby. We created tactile models of part of the market, the St. Nicholas Tower, the pump on the market, and the former Vauban fortifications. Along the route, you’ll also find two games: a sliding puzzle and a spiral maze.
The route has been made more wheelchair-friendly. Here and there, adjustments were made to the curb height or an obstacle was removed. If you notice any areas for improvement while walking, please feel free to let us know.
Finally, we’ve also tried to make the walk accessible to blind people using two vibrating wristbands. If you’d like to try this out, feel free to reach out at lut.hoornaert@talent-is.be or filip.robyn@talent-is.be
