Time travel in Ruien

As part of the project “Square Meter: Everyone’s an Archaeologist!” (supported by LEADER East Flanders), the residents of Ruien had the opportunity to dig into their village’s past like real archaeologists. Local residents worked alongside SOLVA archaeologists in small test pits measuring one by one meter. With great enthusiasm and an eye for precision, they searched the subsoil for archaeological clues to what connects them to their region, their village, and to one another.

The project “Square Meter: Everyone an Archaeologist!” demonstrates that small-scale citizen research can lead to wonderful results. The nearly 800 collected finds span thousands of years of human habitation. It proves once again that the subsoil still holds a wealth of unexplored information.

This walk takes you through Ruien’s unique archaeological past. As you walk, you’ll discover the results of the citizen research and previous archaeological excavations.
