René Van Steenbergen Route

About the architect René Van Steenbergen

Starting in 1934, architect and Beerse native René
Van Steenbergen (1911–1995) designed his first homes
in Beerse. Notable are the playful variations in
color schemes, gables, and wall openings,
which represent a striking new concept in
residential architecture.
The architect is inspired by the
expressionist architecture of the Amsterdam
School. That style is characterized by Art Deco ornamentation
in the facades and the use of exuberant masonry
and various types of stone. Steep gabled roofs are
combined with graceful turrets, ornamental ironwork
, and artisanal details on the window and door frames.
Another typical feature is the horizontal line, made technically possible
by the application of new techniques, such as
reinforced concrete and steel.
After World War II, René Van
Steenbergen developed a new style that is functional and austere
, in which the architecture of the building is reduced to its
essence. He applied the same principle to
church architecture starting in 1960
