House numbers in Bruges

A brief history of house numbers from 1790 to the present.
House numbers ... you don't notice them unless you're looking for an address and can't find it. House numbers are at least as interesting as more conspicuous elements on house facades. Moreover, they changed over time.
For example, there were different systems during the Austrian, French, Dutch and Belgian administrations.
During this walk we will take you in tow in Bruges with house numbers as the common thread. Be amazed by traces of house numbers from the past and present, exceptional combinations of letters and numbers and varying shapes and sizes.
This walk is an initiative of Monumentenzorg and Erfgoedzaken of Stad Brugge, on the occasion of Heritage Day 2024, with the theme Home!
