Masterpieces Walk
Archief Gent presents: the Masterpieces Walk.
This walk takes you through the city and through time: through six masterpieces from the Archief Gent collection, we get to know the city and its history. These “masterpieces” are objects or collections that are indispensable to the Flemish Community due to their unique historical, artistic, archaeological, or cultural value. Similar works are rare or even nonexistent. Each one gives us insight and a deeper understanding of the past.
The Archives manages six masterpieces:
- A monumental map of Ghent in the 17th century, drawn up by Jacques Horenbault (1619);
- A richly decorated register of the guild of carpenters and woodcutters (1685–1772);
- An extensive collection of old architectural drawings (1671–1795);
- German propaganda photographs from World War I, with annotations (1916);
- A collection of prints and portraits by Arent van Wijnendale (1592);
- A series of watercolors of 16th-century monuments by Lieven van der Schelden (1586-1587).
During this walk, we’ll show you historical images of the city of Ghent. The highlights are linked to the cityscape, folklore, and other landmarks in the city. Plus, we’ll tell you all about why these six collection pieces are so unique.
