Walk: Traces of the Red Star Line in the city
Antwerp and the Red Star Line are inextricably linked. Millions of migrants arrived in Antwerp and then departed. That left its mark. The Red Star Line route draws your attention to the traces they left behind and brings their stories back to life.
At the height of the Red Star Lineโs activities, two ships departed weekly from Antwerp. Every week, nearly 3,000 migrants made their way from Central Station to Rijnkaai. These migrants could hardly believe their eyes, but the local population also didnโt always know how to interpret the streams of people in the streets. The migration economy was booming. The Red Star Line had a massive presence in the city.
Today, the traces of this story have largely disappeared. However, the Red Star Line Museum is bringing them back to life. With this route, you can walk through the city and experience it as the migrants did. Just like them, you will start at Central Station and end at the Scheldt, where the Red Star Line ships once set sail.
