Long live labor

Long live labor

The bike route starts at the Grote Markt in Poperinge. It takes you past a number of special sites connected to China, Poperinge, and World War I.

In the summer of 1917, the first Chinese workers arrived in Poperinge. They worked for the British Army and remained there until 1920. They lived in separate camps and observed their own rituals. The Chinese did not come as soldiers, but as guest workers. The Chinese Labour Corps was deployed to build railways, make camouflage nets, maintain tanks, and unload ammunition. After the war, they were responsible for clearing the battlefields.
