The Lilse teutes

The Lilse teutes

"The eldorado of the tute row". This is how the 2014 protection decree describes the villagescape of Sint-Huibrechts-Lille.
The teut trade initially arose out of necessity. For many farming families, the poor Kempen sandy soil did not provide enough to live comfortably. Teuten, or itinerant merchants, tried to earn their living abroad.
Some families achieved great success. With their accumulated wealth, they influenced the appearance of the village by building iconic houses and setting up businesses.
During a short walk through the village center, you will become acquainted with the Lille teuts, and their influence on Saint-Huibrechts-Lille.

The walk was developed on the occasion of the opening of Lille Park in 2024. The park, originally the garden of one of the teut residences, lies partly within the protected village site.

This project was realized by the heritage service of the municipality of Pelt, with thanks to the local history circle of Sint-Huibrechts-Lille.
