The Lilse teuten
“The El Dorado of peddling.” That is how the 2014 preservation order describes the village landscape of Sint-Huibrechts-Lille.
Peddling initially arose out of necessity. The poor sandy soils of the Kempen region did not yield enough for many farming families to live comfortably. Teuten, or traveling merchants, tried to earn a living abroad.
Some families achieved great success. With their accumulated wealth, they shaped the village’s appearance by building iconic homes and establishing small businesses.
During a short walk through the village center, you’ll learn about the Lilse teuten and their influence on Sint-Huibrechts-Lille.
The walk was developed to mark the opening of the Park of Lille in 2024. The park, originally the garden of one of the teuten houses, is partially located within the protected village landscape.
This project was realized by the heritage department of the municipality of Pelt, with thanks to the local history society of Sint-Huibrechts-Lille.
