Vrasene already existed in the time of the Neanderthals. If those remains had happened to be found first in Vrasene and only later in Neanderthal, we would now be talking about “Vrasenedaelers” in the history books.

A document from 1136 mentions the district of Zalegem for the first time. It does not explicitly refer to Vrasene. In 1137, a document refers to that same Zalegem as a “vicus,” which is a “district” of Vrasene.

Zalegem was a district of Vrasene (now part of Sint-Gillis, by the way), so we can say with certainty that Vrasene already existed in 1136.
