The detour Den Aeman immerses you in the rich past of Waterland-Oudeman, once known as Sint-Nicolaas-in-Vaerne.
Waterland-Oudeman was once a purebred marsh village, founded by the monks of the mythical Elmare Priory. Throughout the Middle Ages, numerous floods plagued this region. At the end of the 15th century, Hieronymus Lauwerijn began draining the polders. Waterland Oudeman was not spared during the Eighty Years' War either.
During this walk you will become acquainted with this past.
