Journey through the life of Warden Uncle
Edward Vermeulen moved from Beselare to Hooglede at a young age, where he grew up as a farmer’s son, close to nature and the people. Later, he lived with his parents near the church in Hooglede and became the town treasurer there. He grew into a beloved West Flemish folk writer who championed Flemish literature and, through his novels, painted a vivid picture of village life and the folklore of his time. As a writer for and by the people, he was particularly beloved by workers, farmers, and day laborers, to whom he owed his pseudonym “Warden Oom.”
Named after his autobiographical book (1930), this walking route takes you on a journey through the life of Warden Oom.
