In the mid-19th century, Blankenberge transformed from a small fishing village into a lively seaside resort. The boom in tourism during the Belle Époque at the end of the 19th century brought many affluent vacationers to the town. Blankenberge also has a rich maritime heritage. These vestiges of Blankenberge’s maritime past have been preserved, even though fishing ceased around 1955.
