Audio Walk: Rekem Mental Hospital

This audio walk tells the story of the Rekem Mental Hospital. From 1921 until the 1980s, hundreds of patients resided on the grounds surrounding Rekem Castle.

Through eleven audio clips—some featuring eyewitness accounts—you’ll gain a vivid insight into how the hospital operated and what psychiatric care was like in the past.

The walk consists of two parts. In the first part, we stay in Oud-Rekem. Follow the route on the map and let yourself be guided through the first nine stops in order.

The last two stops are located three kilometers further on, at the Public Psychiatric Care Center and the impressive patients’ cemetery.

You can cover the distance between the two parts of the walk on foot, by bike, or by car. You’ll find more information about this at stop 9.
