The hidden treasures of St. James' Church

The hidden treasures of St. James' Church

St. James’s Church is one of the seven historic churches in Bruges’s city center.

Due to the sharp increase in population during the 13th and 14th centuries, new parishes were established in Bruges. For example, in 1240, the old parish of St. Salvator was split off.

The existing St. James Chapel was replaced by a modest early Gothic church. In the mid-15th century, this was rebuilt into the three-nave church that stands here today.

This tour takes you past the church’s art treasures, which were donated by wealthy local benefactors such as members of the Burgundian court, foreign bankers, and prosperous craft guilds. Prominent figures, in other words, many of whom also found their final resting place in the church. The hidden treasures of St. James’ Church represent a wide range of diverse artistic styles spanning ten centuries, from the Gothic through the Renaissance to the Baroque and Rococo.

Five works of art are included on the Flemish Government’s Masterpieces List. This provides rare or indispensable works of art with extra protection and ensures that these works remain in Flanders.
