Berchem Outside the Walls

Berchem Outside the Walls

A farmer with cows in Berchem—it seems like a fantasy image in today’s urban environment. And yet, not so long ago, a large part of Berchem outside the city walls was still farmland. Cows did indeed graze where the apartment buildings on Fruithoflaan now reach toward the sky. The blue of the flax fields drew curious visitors, and people bought vegetables, fruit, and flowers grown on Berchem soil here. We don’t even have to go back a full century to find these idyllic scenes. We’d love to invite you to (re)discover this neighborhood. Het Rooi, the Schaliënhoeve, the former Fruithof Castle, Fruithoflaan, the former Pulhof Castle, Brilschanspark, and De Veldekens. Discover for yourself that Berchem has even more to offer beyond the city walls.
