Middelburg

Middelburg

Middelburg has a very rich history. Around 1450, the town was founded out of nothing - complete with church, town hall, civic houses, city walls, city walls and gates - by a certain Pieter Bladelin. This wealthy Bruges burgher established his own castle there shortly before.

The rich past of this once bustling town and its prestigious castle may now be largely hidden, but viewed from the air, the medieval street plan is still present. Middelburg was the first village in Flanders to be classified as a protected archaeological monument.

This tour takes you along the most striking places in Middelburg and makes you discover its glorious history.
