Middelburg
Middelburg has a very rich history. Around 1450, the town was founded from scratch—complete with a church, town hall, townhouses, city walls, ramparts, and gates—by a certain Pieter Bladelin. This wealthy citizen of Bruges had already built his own castle there shortly before.
The rich past of this once-bustling town and its prestigious castle may now lie largely hidden, but viewed from the air, the medieval street plan is still clearly visible. Middelburg was therefore the first village in Flanders to be classified in its entirety as a protected archaeological monument.
This tour takes you past the most striking sites in Middelburg and lets you discover its glorious history.
