Edouard Remy village
Wijgmaal grew as a village after Edouard Remy purchased an old watermill along the Dijle River in 1855 and established a starch factory there.
During this walk, we’ll pass by the current factory and the new businesses that have set up shop on the site. Along the various streets, we’ll see workers’ homes, townhouses, and villas built for the factory’s employees. Even the church and the rectory were paid for by the factory. You can see why people used to say: “Wijgmaal is Remy. Remy is Wijgmaal!”
