The hidden treasures of Saint-Jacques Church

The Church of Saint James (“Sint-Jakobskerk”) is one of the seven historic churches in the center of Bruges.

The rapid population growth of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries led to the establishment of new parishes in Bruges. Thus, in 1240, the former parish of Saint Savior (“Sint-Salvator”) was divided.

A modest early Gothic-style church replaced the pre-existing Saint-Jacques Chapel, before being transformed, in the mid-fifteenth century, into the current three-nave church.

This tour invites you to discover the wonders housed within the church: works bequeathed by wealthy donors to the parish, such as members of the Burgundian court, foreign bankers, and wealthy guilds. In other words, prestigious figures, many of whom now rest within the church. The hidden treasures of St. James’ Church
span ten centuries of artistic styles, ranging from Gothic to Baroque and Rococo, including the Renaissance.

Among these cultural assets, five are listed on the Flemish Community’s List of Masterpieces, which provides additional protection for exceptional or essential works while ensuring their preservation in Flanders.
