Heritage walk in Eppegem
In addition to several historically significant buildings and estates, this walk takes you to the many castles that Eppegem is home to. Historically, Eppegem lay on the border of the territory ruled by the lords of Grimbergen, the Berthouts. That border was formed by the Zenne River, where, in the 11th and 12th centuries, the lords of Grimbergen built numerous watchtowers or motte-and-bailey castles to protect their domain from the Dukes of Brabant. These towers were later expanded into castle farms and sometimes full-fledged castle estates, which are still set in a beautiful natural setting today. This fascinating walk ends at the church, situated on the banks of the Zenne along the old Roman military road from Asse to Elewijt, where you can sit on a terrace and reflect for a moment on all the beauty you have seen.
Heemkring de Semse wishes you an interesting and enjoyable walk.
