Cathedrals of industry
At the end of the 19th century, Ghent’s textile industry was still at its peak. Impressive factory complexes—each an architectural gem—sprang up across the cityscape. But starting in the 1960s, the tide turned, and in the decades that followed, Ghent’s grand textile heritage crumbled away, both literally and figuratively. Starting in 2020, photographer Alexander Dumarey has been rephotographing numerous Ghent textile factories that can be seen in the photo collection of the Industrial Museum. Rediscover the cathedrals of industry—or what remains of them—on this bike tour.
