Norbertine walk
The charming village of Beauvoorde serves as the starting point for three scenic walking trails ranging from 5 to 17 km. These walking routes, which traverse the territories of Beauvoorde, Bulskamp, and Houtem, combine recreational and cultural objectives with heritage under the project title “3 Villages, 3 Walks.” The Norbertine Walk, covering a distance of 12 km, is one of the options available to hikers.
Beauvoorde is nestled in a gently rolling landscape that offers views to the south over the IJzer plain to the West Flemish ridges and to the north over the flat polder landscape around Bulskamp and Houtem to the dune belt. On the trails of the Norbertine Walk to Houtem, these panoramic views will undoubtedly delight the hiker.
The “3 Villages, 3 Walks” project introduces hikers to Dutch-language poems that complement the distinctive heritage and scenic diversity along the walking route.
The name of the walk refers to the listed Houtem rectory, which was founded centuries ago by the Norbertine monks of St. Nicholas Abbey in Veurne. The monks found respite in the countryside there and managed their landholdings.
