I Jan Smeken

I Jan Smeken

Five hundred years ago, Jan Smeken was the city poet of Brussels. A modern man. A theatre reformer. A man of the word. His snowman poem from 1511 brought him eternal fame: light-hearted, linguistically skilled and thematically surprisingly contemporary.

Wander through the streets of today and discover the Brussels of the past through passages from Ik Jan Smeken. This historical picaresque novel was published in 2017 and was written by Rick de Leeuw – singer, writer, poet and translator – and Remco Sleiderink, professor of Middle Dutch literature at the University of Antwerp. The audio fragments were recorded by both authors and come from the audiobook version that was published in 2018 by Uitgeverij Rubinstein.
