Almost 300 years ago, engineer Nicolas de Nézot created a detailed model of the city of Oudenaarde and its ramparts. It was commissioned by the French king Louis XV, who saw it as a useful tool for the movements of his occupying troops. Today, the model is kept in the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille.
