Themed routes Toerisme Merksplas vzw created two walking routes of around 5 km that connect as many chapels as possible in and around the village. You can walk both loops

Kaaskerke near Diksmuide is located close to the Yser. Today, the landscape surrounding this former frontline village appears calm and peaceful. But wounds were inflicted here, so deep that they gave the war landscape a completely new appearance. Due to its location right next to the Yser, the old village center was completely destroyed, and a new one was built.

French Marine Fusilier Charles Fouqueray captured the Diksmuide Front landscape in colorful sketches, which we can now rediscover, along with powerful stories, in the Expo Liksems and along this cycling route. Along the way, you will encounter monuments commemorating the First World War. They form scars—called "liksems" in Diksmuide.

Front painter Karel Van Lerberghe and several fellow artists bring the Front landscape to life with fine artworks and stories. This takes place in the LIKSEMS exhibition (Markt Diksmuide) and along this route. On the route—which this Flemish artist also traveled—you will encounter monuments or "scars" that remind us of the past.

This route was created in response to Heritage Day 'Beastly' on April 23, 2024. Cycle between Harelbeke and Anzegem past locations where you can encounter finch sport.
